headshot photographer?

i have become frustrated with that photographer that shoots great headshots. part of it is a product of how i like to crop (zoom in to someones head), the other part has to do with that the shoots i tend to do with people are for headshots for their port. I really need to break these habits and have a wider range of type of people work. Environmental and portraiture included. My safe crop, the one i tend to always go to, is a headshot type crop. back away a bit. this can be done by studying legendary photographs and critic their composition.

Nadav Kander

New favourite. Nadav Kander.

The breadth of his work is outside. Not only is he one of the best (if not the best) contemporary portrait photographers, his landscapes, nudes, and other series are beautiful works of art. His work has many layers. This depth is rare in the commercial world. It is something that I wish to work on and achieve. Even his commercial work for Levi's has depth and cunning. He has shown me that it is possible to be unique, "artsy," and be very creative even in the commercial world. He also teaches me to never stop working on personal work. Lastly, he has given me new found strength to seek depth in my portrait work; to not be afraid to be dark; to experiment.

important

it is important to sit somewhere; away from my phone; away from the normal everyday life; and just let all the thoughts surface to your mind. Then, let them go. Get rid of all the surface thoughts of the everyday, and deeper, more meaningful, and larger thoughts will enter your mind.

new project.

before bed everyday I will be breaking down an image by a legendary photographer. I will break it down to as many details I can possible see, ie elements of the composition, lightning, tone, contrast, emotional impact, visual impact, and my initial reaction.
