the importance of writing for a photographer

Who would have thought writing is very important for a photographer? A couple months ago, I would never had thought so. Now, I am beginning to think it is vital. Writing can help dig deep into the photographs of others and of your own. After writing about a photograph, I begin to understand that photograph at a much deeper level. If it is someoneelses photographer, you can learn a great deal from the writing. If it is your own photograph, it is important to know what you are doing well and what could be improved upon. Continuous writing about photography helps you to grasps concepts that go beyond the visual. For example, in a portrait it can help uncover nuances of a photograph that help to describe that person. Those nuances are what really makes a photograph work, whether you notice them or not. Writing enhances your observation of a photograph and understand of what a photograph really is. Another advantage to writing is you are able to throw ideas around and dig deeper into the reasoning of ideas. For example, I wrote a number of pages of just describing my room in detail. Then, I took those details and formulated what these objects meant to describing who I was as a person. It is learning things like these that help me grow as a photographer. I pay attention more. I learn more. I understand more.
